SpacePods Bioactive Kits - Standard Version
This kit includes two plant cuttings, a bioactive clean up crew, and wood substrate enhancer.
Why do I need a kit?
When starting a vivarium, terrarium, or palidurium, you should always start with a strong clean up crew containing isopods (rolley polley bugs) and springtails. These small but mighty crew members will break down all decaying plant matter, any mold or fungus that forms in the area, as well as provide essential nutrients and fertilizer for your plants.
Who needs a clean up crew?
Wether you’re building a home for a pet (reptiles, lizards, snakes, frogs, etc) or just building a plant oasis, a solid clean up crew is essential. Since we are replicating the outdoors in our terrariums, we need to mimic natures natual cycle. In nature, there are always bugs and microorganisms breaking down decaying plant matter, and that’s exactly what we need in our vivariums. Without a clean up crew, your plants will not thrive and your vivarium will not be self sustaining.
Contents Explained: Isopods
These species of isopods (kit contains
Armadillidium maculatum 'Zebra') are a fun, outgoing, and sought after species of isopod in the trade. They thrive in a humid tropical environment and require a minimum humidity of 60%. These crew members feed on decaying plant matter, and also appreciate weekly snacks such as fish flakes (for protein), fruits and vegetable scraps, and even small pieces of eggshell (for calcium). This kit contains 10 juveniles who are well established and ready to “get to work”.
Contents Explained: Springtails
The other crew members are springtails. This kit contains a cup of roughly 20-50 springtails. These little guys are critical to ALL life. While they eat mostly mold, they help keep the area healthy and lush. They love rotten wood, and are often found deep within the substrate. This culture comes in a cup with charcoal, springtails food (mold enhancer) and water. Springtails are hydrophobic, meaning they float on water. Water is a necessary component in their environment. Often times, when used in combination with pets that utilize a water dish, you might find a “pool” of springtails floating on the surface. This is normal, and can be a great good source for your pet.
Contents Explained: Plant Cuttings
We include two cuttings (rooting not gaurenteed yet) of a vining plant (pothos, philodendron, etc). These plants are great for absorbing excess nutrients, and also provide a great place for the isopods to hide and thrive. These plants are also great for absorbing excess water, and can help prevent flooding in your enclosure. They are sturdy enough to withstand the weight of most small geckos, reptiles, and frogs. They are also great for climbing and hiding.
Contents Explained: Rotten Wood
This kit also comes with a small bag of rotten wood to help enhance the bioactive enclosure and provide nutrients, housing, and diversity for your clean up crew. Rotten wood is essential for a healthy bioactive enclosure. It provides a great place for the isopods to hide, and also provides a great place for the springtails to thrive. Rotten wood also provides a great place for mold and fungus to grow, which is a great food source for the springtails.
